San Francisco’s First Public Power Ambassadors Step Up for Local Energy Future
In June, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission launched the inaugural Public Power Ambassador program – a major milestone in the ongoing Our City, Our Power campaign. The goal of the Our City, Our Power campaign is to achieve full public power in San Francisco through public ownership of the local electric grid.
What is the Public Power Ambassador Program?
The Public Power Ambassador program is designed to increase public awareness and community engagement for the campaign and the benefits of public power. Six respected leaders from across the City were selected as the first cohort of ambassadors. These individuals represent a diverse cross-section of neighborhoods and organizations, including the Excelsior Action Group, Cayuga Neighborhood Improvement Association, and the Dogpatch Neighborhood Association.
Each ambassador is passionate about the long-term benefits of public power and what it means for their local communities such as affordable electricity prices, reinvestment in energy programs and infrastructure, and a more equitable and inclusive public power for all.
To prepare them for their new role, ambassadors went through a series of trainings that covered topics such as:
An overview of the Our City, Our Power campaign
Public speaking and community engagement strategies
Media training and communications support
These tools will empower the ambassadors to become effective advocates for public power, both in their communities and on a broader public stage.
How Ambassadors Will Drive Change
Public Power Ambassadors will support the Our City, Our Power campaign in three ways:
Raising Awareness
Public Power Ambassadors will increase awareness of the campaign, public power, and the benefits of public power with their local communities by attending local meetings, distributing materials, and speaking to the media.
Inspiring Action
Ambassadors will encourage people in their community to take action by visiting our public power “take action” webpage, where individuals can endorse our campaign, follow us on social media, sign up for updates, or call their elected officials. These small actions can build the collective power needed to move the movement forward.
Hosting Local Events
Whether it’s organizing a public forum, joining a panel discussion, or giving an interview, ambassadors will serve as visible voices for public power in San Francisco.
With the Public Power Ambassador program, San Francisco is taking real steps toward a more resilient, affordable, and sustainable energy future – one powered by and for the people.
